This course explains how to recognise and control the main hazards from portable oxy-fuel gas equipment used for welding, cutting, heating and related work.

What you will learn

  • Recognise fire, explosion, gas, fume, burn and cylinder-handling hazards
  • Plan hot work and apply permit controls in general workplaces
  • Check cylinders, regulators, hoses, valves and flashback protection
  • Understand safe leak testing, purging, lighting and shutdown principles
  • Avoid catastrophic hot work on contaminated tanks, drums, containers and unsafe workpieces
  • Respond correctly to leaks, backfires, flashbacks and acetylene emergencies
  • Control welding and cutting fume using ventilation, LEV, RPE and PPE
  • Store, handle and transport cylinders safely

Training boundary: successful completion records the knowledge assessment only. It does not replace equipment-specific practical training, supervised assessment, manufacturer instructions, site rules or written employer authorisation.
