This course explains how to couple and uncouple a standard semi-trailer safely using a fifth wheel and kingpin.

What you will learn

  • Recognise the main runaway, crush and trailer-stability risks
  • Prepare the coupling area, tractor unit and trailer
  • Set the correct coupling height and inspect the fifth wheel, jaws and kingpin
  • Prove the lock using tug tests, a visual inspection and the security device
  • Connect and disconnect air and electrical services in the correct sequence
  • Raise and lower landing legs and use air suspension safely
  • Complete final walk-around checks and respond to defects or unexpected movement

Training boundary: successful completion records the knowledge assessment only. It does not replace vehicle- and trailer-specific instructions, practical training, supervised assessment, site rules or written employer authorisation.
